Sara Möller | Driva Drift

Berg Gallery is pleased to present Sara Möller’s third solo exhibition at the gallery, titled Driva Drift, featuring a new series of ceramic and bronze sculptures as well as watercolor paintings. The title is a play on words where ”driva” in this context can mean to propel, lead, or to set something in motion, while ”drift” can refer to desire, impulse, drive, or the artwork with the same title.

Sara Möller’s third exhibition at Berg Gallery delves into the intimate and physical relationship between artist and material. At its center is the monumental work Drift, which was created during Möller’s residency at the European Ceramic Workcentre (EKWC) in the summer of 2024. The creation of the piece was a physically demanding process in which the artist’s own body functioned as a tool. Her knees plunged into the clay, forcing it to yield. Her knuckles grew raw from relentless kneading, while her feet ached after hours of barefoot labour. There was no clear roadmap—only an ongoing and transformative process, driven by both brute force and tender repair. The result is a work that speaks of strength and vulnerability, chaos and care, and the complex, reciprocal relationship between creation and destruction.

Mölller’s artistic practice spans multiple disciplines, yet it remains firmly rooted in ceramics. With a playful and intuitive approach, she creates objects and installations that feature amorphous, organic forms, incorporating various unexpected elements—a silver charm, graphite powder, silicone, a worn-out nylon stocking. Möller describes the process as one of dressing and adorning her sculptures, drawing parallels to childhood games and the ritual of getting ready for a night out. Through these performative gestures, the sculptures become more than mere objects—they are imbued with character, identity, and a tangible human presence.

Sara Möller (b. 1982, Växjö) lives and works in Gothenburg. She holds an MA in Ceramic Art from HDK-Valand. In 2013, she was awarded the prestigious Beckers Art Award, and has since then exhibited frequently throughout Sweden and abroad. Previous solo exhibitions include Berg Gallery, Stockholm (2022, 2020), Norrtälje Konsthall (2019), Galleri Thomassen, Gothenburg (2018, 2015), Vandalorum, Värnamo (2017) and Färgfabriken, Stockholm (2014). Möller has also been shown in exhibitions at NEVVEN, Gothenburg (SE), Charlottenborg Kunsthal, Copenhagen (DK), Westewald Ceramics Museum (DE), SÍM Gallery, Reykjavik (IS), Röhsska Museet, Gothenburg (SE), CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark, Middelfart (DK), ArkDes, Stockholm (SE), Form/Design Center, Malmö (SE) and Liljevalchs, Stockholm (SE). Möller also works with public sculpture and her work Pissed Elin—dedicated to the writer Elin Wägner—received much attention when it was installed in Växjö in 2017. Möller is represented in the collections of the Public Art Agency Sweden, SAK, Höganäs Museum, Beckers Collection, Göteborgs Stad, and Stockholm Konst, among others. In 2022, she received the Swedish Arts Grants Committee's 10-year working grant.
