Biography

Amalia Bille seeks to visually interpret fleeting emotional states and moods that often resist definition. Portraits and human heads are central to her work, frequently accompanied by elements of flora and fauna. Her sculptures are characterized by a direct, naïve, and expressionist style, where playfulness and surreal, dreamlike elements coexist. Often featuring childlike facial features, the characters convey complex emotions such as melancholy, contemplation, tenderness and longing. At the heart of her practice lies an exploration of human existence and the inner landscapes we all navigate.

Bille’s working method is both sponteneous and attentive – subject matter and form emerge organically as she interacts with the material, rather than being dictated by prior sketches. The textured, irregular surfaces of her works invite a tactile experience, while revealing cracks and patches of play as testament to human touch and care.

Amalia Bille lives and works in Mölndal, outside of Gothenburg. She is educated at Hovedskous Målarskola, and received a Bachelor’s degree in textile art in 2006 and a Master’s degree in ceramics in 2017, both from HDK (the Academy of Art and Design) in Gothenburg. Her work has been shown in several separate and group exhibitions and is represented in the collections of Statens Konstråd, Stockholms Läns Landsting, Västra Götalandsregionen, Linköpings Kommun, etc.
